I decided I was going to go through with this Amateur Radio hobby, and found out the test was in one week at the State Convention. I could have waited another month or so and took the test elsewhere, but where is the challenge in that? So I did what any other self respecting geek would do and started to google my brains out.
I cane across a few choice items I would like to share. First of all, The Ham Whisperer has about a hundred videos on YouTube that are just too good to be true. He goes through each section of the exam, covers the material and application and then walks you through all the questions in a quiz.
Next up is an iPad/iPhone app called "Exam Prep" from Patrick Maloney. This was app goes through all the sections and material as well, but it includes a series of multiple choice test that match the FCC material. As you take the tests it tracks how well you do in each section so you can identify your strengths and weaknesses.
I spent the week watching/listening to the lessons on YouTube from my iPhone and chance I got. Same thing goes for the test prep. A few spare minutes and I could run through a test and make some progress. 5 years ago or so I probably would have had to go buy a book somewhere or some insanely priced software package. This is why I love being a geek and having a world full of like minded people. Share some knowledge, help some others achieve their goals, and gain a loyal following.
When it comes time to upgrade my license, I am going to use the same resources with confidence and hopefully be able to pass on what I know in a like manner.
