I have begun to narrow my Twitter account options down quite a bit. I tried a few of those services out there that are supposed to line you up with followers with similar interests, they work about as well as using a fire hose to fill a dixie cup. I dropped all the people I followed that did not follow me back, with the exception of a few "high profile" types. I went from 900 or so following down to less than 300. I still find it difficult to wade through so many tweets, in an hour I can have about 150 to 200 updates and 90% of it is junk. I'm just shy of having 200 followers, which is pretty good I think. I haven't touched the thing in a 10 days either just to see what would happen.
I found a pretty good bunch of Ham Radio folks and have had a some help and tips come in from a few people right off the bat. That is the part I really like. An added bonus is now that I linked my Facebook account; my tweets become Facebook posts, and I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
My Twitter experiment has no evolved into a mass outreach and then slowly funneling out the parts that don't really apply. My guess is that for every 20 or so people I end up following in the short term, 1 will end up being long term. I'll play the numbers game until I find the right numbers and contract until I get the right information and people. I've made some good connections so far, and I think it really has been worth it. I can't help but wonder how many people following me think my posts are worthless though....
