Staying prepared

Are you ready for even a small power outage, let alone a disaster? The idea came to me tonight while changing batteries in a flash light tonight. We always as few laying around, but I do not keep uo with it very well, and it's always at the worst time. In this day and age and the way things are going you HAVE to have a plan. Here are just a few things I thought of tonight and I think I have another app idea ahead of me.

Batteries: you can stock up cheap at warehouse stores like Costco
Water: we have the big blue 5 gallon jugs we keep and change out every few months. 20 gallons if we need it. Our pressure tank also holds about the same.
Food: Walmart has started carrying bulk foods, things that last for years and can be reconstituted. Also food for you pets.
A coleman stove and fuel.
Firewood: if you have a wood stove or a fireplace, keep it in good order and ready to run.
Ham radio: make sure you have spare batteries charged in your go bag. A spare 12volt charged is also a good idea.
Clothes: thing to protect you from the elements.
I suppose some spare lumber for repairs, a few tarps and bungee cords would also come in handy.

A human can go weeks without food, but only days without water. Bottled water would also be good.
If you are on medication, make sure you have a weeks or more on hand.
Canned food also has good longevity and can be eaten without heating. Crackers and peanut butter could go a long way too.

I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I think it's getting more important each day that we start thinking about this.  It's only a matter of time before something happens in the area you are in and disasters never get predicted very well.  When people do get a heads up, chaos always ensues and people go nuts buying up things, or even worse raiding and looting.
